Indonesia

Nursing in Indonesia began during the Colonial Era (1799-1942) with the establishment of the first hospital, Binnen Hospital in Jakarta, primarily serving Dutch staff and soldiers. Under British rule, healthcare expanded to include prisoner treatment and focused on smallpox and mental health.

The Dutch further developed hospitals, especially in Jakarta, and introduced formal nursing education in 1900 with a three-year program producing certified Mantri Nurses. Early nursing emphasized technical skills, with the nursing process incorporated into education in 1986.

The Indonesian National Nurses Association (PPNI) was founded in 1974 to promote nursing professionalism and welfare. Nursing organizations evolved alongside hospitals like the Vpabst Resident Hospital (1819), which later became (Rumah Sakit Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo). Advances in healthcare and technology have continued to enhance nursing professionalism in Indonesia.

Nurses have played a vital role in healthcare since the time of Florence Nightingale, serving not only in medical tasks but also as advocates, educators, communicators, researchers, and collaborators.

In Indonesia, Mayapada Hospital, established in 2008 after acquiring the Honoris Hospital of Tangerang, has grown to include seven hospitals and continues to expand. Over approximately 17 years, Mayapada Hospital’s nursing staff have contributed significantly to individual, family, and community health through both hospital care and community service activities like blood donations and social services.

The hospital has earned national and international accreditations and supports government health programs such as BPJS. Mayapada Hospital also invests in nursing education and training through collaborations with international hospitals like Apollo Hospitals and National University Hospital Singapore, as well as academic institutions including Australian University, UPH, and UI. Additionally, their nursing team actively contributes to the profession by publishing research through their journal club.
